Rocket Candy (Potassium Nitrate and Sugar)
While working on my rocket projects I read up on homemade rocket fuel. The only two that are viable are black powder (gunpowder) and rocket candy. Since Black Powder is not available where I live, I chose to make rocket candy as an experiment.
The formula that I followed was 65% Potassium Nitrate and 35% Sugar.
There are many sites that give directions for making rocket candy, so I won’t repeat them in detail here, but the technique I used was to combine the ingredients by weight, and melt them until the become a brownish mass of uniform consistency.
I believe it is possible to simply mix them together without melting them, but this is less efficient. It is also possible to add different things to the mixture, such as Iron Oxide (rust) and fructose (corn syrup) to make the mixture more powerful.
The finished product worked very well, it produced a strong flame which burned for several seconds.
