P0-MS4: Part 254: Randomised Planets

by on Oct.08, 2017, under Astral Realms, P-0, Software and Games, Spiritus Astrum

I have verified that the randomised planets work up close as well, but there is still some testing to be done, particularly with regards to the radii of each planet. I need to make sure that I can create planets in a variety of sizes, from small moons to huge worlds.

The next step will be to add a new skybox/clouds system. My current system is very basic, and basically fades between the space skybox and a fixed skybox image, which means that the sky for every planet is the same.

My current idea is to add a simple flat colour or gradient for both the space and planet skyboxes, this will allow me to change these colours and fade between them easily.

The details can then be added (or removed) as regular game objects. So, I can use nebula objects, starfield objects, etc to decorate the space scene, and volumetric clouds, fog, weather effects, etc, on the planets. This should make transitioning from surface to space, and between different areas of space, much easier to accomplish.

It means I can just change the gameobjects and sky colour each time, instead of trying to create a set of images for each sky type, or trying to create a complex sky shader that does everything. I will be experimenting with this next week.
