P-154: KVM Server: Build and Configuration

by on Dec.28, 2014, under Servers and Networking

I have completed the construction of the KVM server, I am actually making this post from the server machine now. The build seemed to go ok, except for one issue I had where the fans would spin up and the motherboard lights would come on, but nothing could be seen on the screen. I eventually figured out that this was caused by one of the standoffs on the board being incorrectly placed. This likely caused a short circuit in the board, preventing POST from completing.

I installed CentOS 7, a linux distribution that I have never used before. I chose it because it seems better suited to commercial and server use than most of the other distros.

I chose the “minimal” install, and configuration has so far gone well, with the exception of a few DNS problems and yum installation issues.

I am currently working on installing and configuring OpenNebula, a virtual machine manager. I hope to have some Virtual Machines online and ready for testing in a few days.
